On December 16th, the girls varsity basketball team faced off against the John Bowne High School Lady Wild Cats on the road. It was a battle of two undefeated teams in which the Hawks prevailed 43-37. The Hawks took a commanding 34-19 lead after three quarters and then the Hawks nearly blew that lead as they were outscored 18-9 in the fourth quarter, but were able to barely hold on. The Hawks totaled five assists, 36 rebounds, 11 two-point field goals, two three-point field goals and made 15 free throws. Senior forward Sierra Berkel was a magnificent 11-14 from the free throw line and also had 14 rebounds. Junior guard Debra Chan also had a very successful game, tallying up 13 points and two assists. The Hawks have now extended their regular season game winning streak to 39 straight games. The Hawks are now 5-0 and are now in sole possession of first place in the Queens A Division. The Hawks knocked off the previously undefeated Lady Wildcats and Benjamin N. Cardozo was defeated by Newtown HIgh School. The Hawks’ next game is on December 18th at home against the William C. Bryant High School Lady Owls.
