The girls wrestling team finished sixth in their second season in the Skyline Division, with a four-win and five-lose record. Despite its penultimate loss to Wingate Educational Campus High School on May 13, the team still had playoff aspirations which were unfortunately crushed when their season ended with a loss against Francis Lewis.
The girls wrestling team regrets not having enough wrestlers to compete in all the weight classes. Junior Rebecca Duras said, “This season has been very frustrating because we lost many of our meets since we didn’t have enough girls.”
This year’s team is different from that of last year; junior co-captain Jessica Mgbeojirikwe explained, “There are a lot of rookies on the team, so everyone is still learning.”
THHS lost to Wingate 23-36, but Jessica and freshman Alexis Sarabia had impactful matches. Although she lost in the first period, Alexis regrouped and defeated a senior wrestler by a large margin. Likewise, Jessica defeated her opponent and scored points.
Freshman Noorshifa Arssath credited her teammates’ success to their new coach David Rojas and managers Daniel Plotkin and Vasili Spanopoulos, “They tell us that we own the mat and no one can push us around because it’s our mat.”
