Boys Volleyball

THE BOYS varsity volleyball team was crowned the Queens Division A Champions with an almost flawless record, winning nine games out of ten throughout their season.

In previous years, the volleyball team seeded no higher than second in the Queens Division. However, by defeating Benjamin N. Cardozo High School twice, they were able to seize first.

Senior Caleb Hong expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “Cardozo is usually always the top team in our division, so it was nice to beat them and take the division title. Our coach, Ms. Caiaccia, really played a factor by motivating us to push harder and focus on being more efficient in the game.” Junior Malik Khan expressed equal pride in his teammates. He said, “For the first time in years, we had won divisional champs, so that was a huge accomplishment. Our second round exit could have gone either way and was not what we had expected it to be. Nevertheless, we had taken a balanced team into the playoffs with an impressive record.”

The boys won against Edward R. Murrow High School in their first playoff game on May 12, 2-0. Although their second playoff game against Fiorello H. Laguardia High School came close, the team faced the end of their season as Laguardia came out on top with a final score of 2-1.

Boys Tennis

IN A historic season, the boys varsity tennis team picked up wins against undefeated rival, Cardozo High School. Because of this newfound dominance, the tennis team was able to win the Queens A1 Division title, making it to the playoffs. They were seeded fourth overall in the city, ahead of even Stuyvesant High School. In their first playoff game on May 15, the team beat Eleanor Roosevelt High School 4-1. Subsequently, they defeated Stuyvesant, marking the first time ever that THHS has ever beaten them. These wins guaranteed them a spot in the semifinals of the PSAL championships, in which they faced against first seed Beacon High School at the National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Park, where they ultimately lost.

Nevertheless, their success this season did not come without a bit of a stress. The team admitted that they still struggled against certain teams. Sophomore Max Prohorov said that Cardozo pressured him most, explaining, “ They are pretty much our biggest rivals so it gets pretty tense.”

Senior Ethan Nittolo also mentioned Bayside High School as another rival, citing their strong 1st and 2nd doubles and 3rd singles as tough competitors. Reflecting on their two wins against Bayside, Ethan said, “I felt our team adjusted phenomenally when they were down in some of these matches and their will to win was what helped us to defeat them.”
